Social EventsBasketball-Watching Every year, EGSC plans at least 3 major Duke basketball-watching events where engineering graduate students and their families are welcome to free pizza, beer, and general rowdiness! We usually gather someplace on campus that offers us a big screen so we can cheer on the Duke basketball team as they dominate against another worthy opponent!
BBQs Expect these at least twice a year! Whether we're grillin' or caterin' these BBQs are by far our most widely attended events! One in the Fall to celebrate our new graduate students --- the GBQ BBQ offers early-comers a free t-shirt! GBQ BBQ? Yea, the GBQ part means "Give Back the Quad" since the undergraduates will be dominating the E-Quad throughout the school-year. But, fear not, we also have a TBQ BBQ to start off the summers where we "Take Back the Quad" as the undergraduates evacuate campus for summer break!
E-Socials Every Friday afternoon during the school-year engineering graduate students hang out at Twinnie's to enjoy some free beer to unwind after a long week of work. EGSC co-sponsors this event with the undergraduate Engineering Student Council.
Mahato Memorial Event On January 18, 2008, Abhijit Mahato was found shot to death in his apartment blocks away from Duke's campus. At the time, Abhijit was a 29-year-old PhD graduate student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and was one week away from taking his qualifying exams. EGSC has been working with the Pratt administration as well as The Graduate School to organize an annual event in his honor. The first annual Mahato Memorial will take place on September 15, 2010. Please see the event website for more details.
